The Prophecy

Set to an autobiographical poem written in 2016, The Prophecy, is a video dance that is the result of a multimedia collaboration with Carolina Vilela. Over the course of a month, Carolina and I exchanged one video per week that responded to one item in a series of actions based on the prompt : Things I want to do to another body or things I want another body to do to me. Once the month was over, each of us had submitted 4 choreographic phrases. We then asked each other to perform the 8 phrases in an original sequence.

The Prophecy Text

The choreography in The Prophecy was my 8 phrase proposition. Carolina and I’s process continued afterwards to become the choreographic material for a residency at La Generale Nord Est in Paris, France during which we pieced together the many facets of our correspondence between Brazil, The United States, and France between 2016 and 2020. Because the choreography we created speaks to the desires we give voice to in our actions as well as the desires we do not share, I felt inclined to layer the movement with this poem I’d written several years ago because it is also about embodying internal and external space. Both elements address the potential for desires to be seen as facts, thus aspects of truth that manifest in spite of always being recognized as such.
